I created this tool in conjunction with the Institute for Habits of Mind. In this activity, participants were asked to create a line from habit to habit in order to create a map that compares their relative strengths. The result is a spider-web that shows that all learners have things they can work on and things they are very strong with. You can read more about using this tool on the Institute's blog.

This tool was created for an empathy workshop. It's a form of an empathy map. Teachers envisioned what a student's experience might be like from the moment they walked into the classroom until the moment they left. In the workshop, teachers sticky noted opportunities for creating authentic connections: both student-to-student connections and student-to-teacher connection.

Sadly, Google decided to shutter Jamboard on October 1, 2024. A while back, I created several popular Jamboard templates. Now that Jamboard is shut down, I've translated those Jamboards into PDF versions. Feel free to download these templates and give them a try in other systems like Figjam, Lucid, or Miro.

It's estimated that about 90% of an iceberg lies beneath the surface. Thus, the iceberg is often used as a metaphor to illustrate how thoughts, feelings, and opinions often remain "below the surface." This tool challenges users (teachers or students) to interview someone else in the learning community to figure out what might be on the surface, and figure out what might be waiting below the surface.

I co-developed this tool with my thought partner, Shawna Parkinson. Let’s call this thing a prototype. It’s not perfect. It’s SOMETHING to work with and try. This may be a great tool to use in teacher workshops or for teachers to use individually. When working individually, teachers may be able to visualize their learning community: the more the graph is colored, the more opportunities for students to feel like they belong.
